Beyoncé - Beyond Compare to this Southern Artist

Never would I compare myself to Beyoncé - but today I think I am seeing her creative process much like my own. The hype is that she is now trying to cross onto hallowed “country”  ground… and is she welcome there? Her new album, Cowboy Carter, is not just a “Beyoncé goes country” album, it’s an album by an artist who says “This ain’t a country album. This is a ‘Beyoncé’ album.”

The album features many other well-known artists such as Dolly Parton and Willie Nelson who are collaborating with her to record a new version of their songs. With odes to the Beatles and the Beach Boys, Beyoncé explains this work of art “is a result of challenging myself, and taking my time to bend and blend genres together to create this body of work.”

Using brushwork versus a palette knife can create different results. Blending colors builds depth and contrast.

In my studio, I am always challenging myself by using different tools to “bend and blend genres.” I use different lessons I have learned along the way to work out paintings on the canvas that hopefully reflect me and my process. Bend and blend - I like it.

So, should Edouard Manet, Basquiat, or maybe even some of the Russian impressionists want to come back from the dead and pick up a paintbrush in my studio - they are welcome.
