Inspired by pink! Gladeolas are architecturally interesting in composing a painting. This salmon color is one of my favorites, and I was excited to see these bright blooms at the market. The apples scattered at the base are the perfect balance for this strong flower.

Kindred Spirits. Yoshino cherry trees announce early spring with white blossoms that turn pink. McIver Avenue has planted them all along the sidewalk, making it a gorgeous spot for a springtime stroll.

A roadside landmark in Transylvania county, this is a subject that I keep returning to. This barn on Highway 276 stands alone season after season.

Bartram's Country is an area located in Jasper County, SC, near Pocoteligo. It’s named for being the place where naturalize, William Bartram, explored in the late 18th century. A good friend suggested I pull off the Coastal Highway 17 on the way to Florida to appreciate the swampy marshes. I anticipate a few paintings based on that stop.

“These figs started as a 2ft tall shrub from the downtown market. Today it stands at least 10 ft tall, shading my studio window. I began painting this vase life-size, usually my preference. In order to create more balance, I decided it needed to grow!”

After a lovely bridal luncheon, I snagged these bright roses and the tall crystal vase and painted them larger than life. They were in full bloom and looked so strong on their own that I decided not to include the other flowers. I think it all felt grounded when the cloth became blue.

Trees in a forest are unique individuals, but they’re also interdependent. I’ve found that the lives of Southerners tend to follow a similar pattern. This particular group of trees is in a flat, roadside area near Brevard, NC.

No rumor - it was real! Scott and I scored phenomenal seats in Vegas to see Adele. It was AMAZING. What a show! For weeks, I had been listening to Adele in my studio to make sure I was prepped. This painting of zinnias and figs was a fun super-layered painting inspired by Adele belting it out in the background.

“Found in the pantry, this cake sat not quite baked. When I come back to a painting fresh after, in this case, years, I want to change things. Here, the icing needed to be fudgier, thicker. A mix of chocolate brown and warn yellow and this cake is ready to be sliced.”

Most of my paintings begin in the abstract. Sometimes I decide to stay there. Each stroke becomes a play or move and the game is to work with each one as a base for the next. Sometimes these abstracts begin to take a shape or form like the shapes you see in the clouds. I find working in the abstract more of a challenge than painting to copy a still life or landscape that I am actively observing.
